KADAPA: After bestowing several projects on his native district, Kadapa, chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy is contemplating setting up a steel factory here. According to sources in the district administration and Congress party, over 8,000 acres of land has already been identified for the purpose near Ambavaram in Jammalamadugu mandal. According to information, the chief minister is scheduled to hold discussions with district officials over the land allocation and other requirements for the factory.
"The identified land belongs to the government. There is no problem in allotting it, but water could be a major hurdle for the factory,"felt a senior official.
However, other officials said that it should not be a problem as sufficient water would be available in the Mylavaram reservoir since Krishna water from Pothireddypadu head regulator could be drawn through Galeru Nagari Sujala Sravanti (GNSS) project. GNSS provides water mainly to Jammalamadugu and Pulivendula constituencies. Water is already being drawn from Mylavaram reservoir for the Rayalaseema Thermal Power Project (RTPP) at Muddanuru.
The proposed site near Ambavaram village is very near to the RTPP and the Renigunta-Gooty railway line, which will help in importing iron ore, one of the main raw materials for the proposed project, from Bellary. Iron ore from Bellary is being transported in hundreds of trucks everyday to Chennai port via Kadapa district. It may be recalled the CM sanctioned several projects to the district, including a university, medical college, airport, IIIT, 21st century gurukulam, HPS branch, ring road, etc. Even the controversial uranium project got clearance after he came to power.
